Our Donor’s Story
I was homeless at fifteen, and again at thirty-six. I don’t know what I would have done without the YWCA.
I am an immigrant who moved to Canada from the Netherlands. I was born and raised in Amsterdam and came to Canada with my ex-partner in 1990. We separated in 1997. I left an abusive relationship in the middle of winter. At the time, I was living in the country, about forty kilometers north of Prince Albert and left on my bicycle with nothing but the clothes on my back.
A man offered me a ride, which I accepted. I threw my bike in the back of his truck and explained that I was leaving my husband. He offered me a place to stay, and I ended up living with him for three months. I became pregnant, but he didn’t want a baby—or me. He dropped me off at the YWCA at 1895 Central Avenue. I was lucky: a bed was available. I applied for social assistance.
I stayed at the YWCA for about four months. At that time, the Child Mother Future Program (now Family Futures) was located there. I found an apartment shortly before my baby was born and received great support from both Family Futures and the YWCA.
My biggest hurdle was education—I was a high school dropout with only a grade nine education and had been on my own since age fifteen. After my daughter was born, I tried applying for jobs, but the ones available to me (Walmart, Superstore, etc.) all required evening and weekend shifts. Daycare was only available Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
With continued support from Family Futures, I grew more confident and eventually applied for a student loan. I was accepted into the Social Work program at the University of Regina as a mature student. At that time, they accepted students who didn’t have a grade twelve education.
It was a stressful time. English was my second language, and I couldn’t afford to fail. If I did, I would be a single mom on assistance with student loan debt. But four years later, I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Social Work. I even won an award for being the most distinguished student—earning the highest average in the province in the program that year. I’ve worked for the Saskatchewan Health Authority for twenty-two years.
My first home cost $10,000—money I received when my divorce was finalized. I was still on assistance at the time, before I received my student loan. Social Services allowed me to use that money to buy a house, but no bank would give me a mortgage. I found a tiny house behind the KFC on 23rd Street East in Prince Albert for exactly $10,000.
After working for a few years, I bought a slightly bigger house. In 2008, I purchased my first rental property, with the goal of offering affordable housing.
I’ve been handy since I was fifteen, when I built myself a room in the attic of a squatter’s house in Amsterdam. That skill helped me renovate houses while working full-time for the SHA. I currently own seven homes in Prince Albert.
I’ve done well—but I will never forget where I came from. I was homeless at fifteen, and again at thirty-six. I had no family in Canada. I don’t know what I would have done without the YWCA. I would have been pregnant and homeless on the street.
Thank you,
Caroline
